Club Invention Newsletter

Club Invention flew into the Hope Center this year. Mrs. White, Willard City Schools, director of Club Invention brought the program to the Willard Hope Center. It was her goal to help show the kids what the Hope Center is about and to provide a way for some kids who lived in the area of the Hope Center to have the opportunity to be involved in the program. “For some kids, transportation can be a problem. Parents are not always able to pick kids up at the end of the activity. Many of those same kids live in the area of the Hope Center.”

Club Invention was free for 25 students thanks to a generous donation from a local donor. Mrs. White stressed, “We are very lucky to have businesses and community members recognize the importance of these programs.  Since we coordinated with the Hope Center this year, our target audience was grades 3-5 but everyone that came to the Hope Center participated and had a great experience. It was a great opportunity for our older kids to help the younger kids.”

Every spring Mrs. White directs Camp Intervention at Willard Elementary which is a week-long program which introduces kids to (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Our tentative dates for 2022 are June 6-10. Our adventures in STEM will include: Spacecation, Robotic Aquatics, The Attic, and Marble Arcade. Again, we are so fortunate to offer camp invention at a reduced rate thanks to generous donors who realize the importance of hands-on activities to engage our students. The sessions are led by veteran teachers who are excited to bring science to life. The program provides all the materials needed to do the activities.” Past programs have included robotic pet vet, solar pets, and mic it up, just to name a few. Mrs. White has been a Willard Preschool teacher for 7 years. She has been over Camp Invention for 5 years. “I love my preschool job and team. Camp Invention and Club Invention gives me a chance to work with the older kids whom many were in my class a few years back. I love seeing kids get excited about learning.”

Yesenia, one of the high school students stated, “I learned to be creative and think outside the box.” Her favorite thing was the spaceship and the astronaut suit..
During this year's club invention children learned about the invention of airplanes. They held a competition of designing, flying and competing with their own paper airplane. One thing that was created when men started traveling in space was the ability to look back at the earth. The kids were shown how satellites change the perspective of how we can look at the earth. “The kids were shown where they were from above the earth when we zoomed in on the Hope Center. The kids were then asked to create their own city from what it would look like from above.”

Cities included buildings, water supplies, billboards and several even included The Hope Center. At the end of the project time, each group had to explain to the other groups what was in their cities. Hailey enjoyed learning how to work with others. She liked how her team members helped her.

“It is kind of amazing how far we have come in such a short time when you think about when the Wright brothers took their first flight.” The group was given a virtual tour of the International Space Station and all the things that were limited in space. The small amount of water made taking baths or showers not an option. Jaxson couldn’t believe they washed their hair with a special soap.
“Some sort of wipey was used to clean yourself. “I could never go without a shower!” stated one girl.

The next goal of the members was to make their own space ship or station and be able to explain the different parts needed to stay alive in the space station. Projects included bathrooms, beds - which you were tied into so you wouldn’t float, large screen TVs., carpet, curtains and even a place to eat.

The Explorers learned that there are seven layers to a space suit and all of the parts and pieces which go into a space suit helped prepare them for the next challenge. Teams needed to design their own space suits for space. “It is amazing the creativity of kids when they get together and try to come up with a design.” stated Kim Blanchard, one of the staff at the Hope Center.

“We encourage and set expectations before we set the kids off on the challenges. On one of the last challenges one group had taken the time to write down the steps they wanted to take before they started the project” commented  Dennis Blanchard, Hope Center Director. “I think at times staff members were as excited about the project as the kids were.” Phyliss, one of the volunteers, couldn't believe so many kids had never built paper airplanes and was excited about showing many of them how to make them.

When asked Mrs. White if she accomplished what she wanted with Club Intervention this year, she replied, “Absolutely, my goal was for kids to create, learn, work together, and get excited about space. I know this was accomplished by listening to the kids talking about what they were creating. I was so proud of how they interacted with each other and worked as a team.”

Was it worth bringing it to the Hope Center? Mrs. White replied “Yes, the whole idea of bringing club invention to the Hope Center was for families to know the Hope Center was a place for kids to interact with each other, learn a life lesson, get help with school work, and have fun.  Some kids that did not start out going to the Hope Center now want to continue to go even though club invention is over so I think that goal was accomplished.

When asking the kids about Club Intervention many liked the projects and working together.
